We take our cell phones and PDAs and laptops and iPads for granted. This guy appeared to be the exception rather than the rule in Santiago de Cuba, where I was asked by one person to send him a phone because his had broken and he couldn't afford a new one. Internet access is also extremely limited - almost everyone I spoke to provided someone else's address because they don't have their own, since getting an email address must be authorized by the government. At the hotel, the speed was so slow that it was an exercise in frustration to log in. Not a bad thing while on vacation!
